May 19, 2010: Game Notes

ABOUT LAST NIGHT: The Timber Rattlers beat Peoria 14-1. Wisconsin scored three runs in the second, four runs in the third, three runs in the fourth, and four runs in the seventh. Nick Bucci and Del Howell combined on a one-hitter. The Chiefs spoiled the shutout bid with an unearned run in the ninth.

HAPPY ANNIVERSARY: The Rattlers set a season high for runs scored in 2010 one year to the date of their season high for runs in a game in 2009. On May 18, 2009 Wisconsin beat Clinton 14-7 at Time Warner Cable Field.

SINCE…The 13 run margin of victory was the largest for the Rattlers since a 16-2 win at Cedar Rapids on July 10, 2004.

HIT PARADE: Pete Fatse, Scooter Gennett, Chris Dennis, and Erik Miller paced the 13-hit attack with two hits each. Fatse drove in three runs and D’Vontrey Richardson, Khris Davis, and Dennis each had two RBI.

MULTI BALL: Gennett had his fifteenth two-hit game of the season last night. He has 16 multi-hit games this season. Gennett is hitting .351 and is in third place in the Midwest League.

ANOTHER FIFTEEN: Bucci tossed six scoreless frames and allowed one hit. He extended his current scoreless streak to 15 consecutive innings. Bucci’s ERA has dropped to 1.65 and he is currently seventh in the Midwest League in that category.

ONE AND ONLY: Nelson Perez hit a leadoff double against Bucci in the top of the third inning. That was the only hit of the game for the Chiefs. Last night was the second time this season Rattler pitchers have combined on a one-hitter.

A FIRST: Howell pitched the final three innings to get his first professional save.

ASSIGNMENT: Milwaukee Brewers outfielder Carlos Gomez is on a rehab assignment with the Timber Rattlers for the next two days. He will wear #31

MAKING MOVES: The Brewers made roster moves after Tuesday’s game. Pitchers Hiram Burgos and Chad Robinson and infielder Carlos George have been transferred to extended spring training. Pitchers Santo Manzanillo and Andy Sauter and infielder Kyle Dhanani have joined the Rattlers from extended spring training. All three are active for today’s game.

ABOUT THE OPPONENTS: The Peoria Chiefs are the Midwest League affiliate of the Chicago Cubs. They are 22-17 and in third place in the Western Division. The Chiefs are one game behind first place Beloit and just a ½ game behind second place Quad Cities. In their most recent series, Peoria took three out of four games from the Burlington Bees at Community Field in Burlington, Iowa. Last year, the Chiefs went 81-57. They qualified for the playoffs as the second half Western Division Champions when they finished with a 43-26 record. Peoria was knocked out of the playoffs in the first round courtesy of a sweep at the hands of the Cedar Rapids Kernels.

FAMILIAR FACE: The Chiefs are managed by Casey Kopitzke. Kopitzke was a 27th round pick of the Cubs in the 1999 draft out of the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh. Kopitzke, a native of Green Bay, Wisconsin played in the Cubs organization from 1999-2006 and made it as high as Triple-A Iowa. Kopitzke played against the Timber Ratters when he was a member of the Lansing Lugnuts in 2000.

2010 SEASON SERIES: The Rattlers are 1-3 against the Chiefs this season. Peoria swept a three game series from the Rattlers at O’Brien Field. The Chiefs beat the Rattlers 5-4, 4-2, and 8-7 April 27 through April 29.

COMPARE AND CONTRAST: The Timber Rattlers are hitting .258 as a team. They have scored 183 runs (4.8/game) and hit 16 home runs. The Chiefs are hitting .247 as a team. They have scored 165 runs (4.2/game) and hit 10 home runs. Wisconsin pitchers have a team ERA of 4.44 while allowing a total of 191 runs (5.0/game) this season. Peoria pitchers have a team ERA of 4.27 while allowing 190 runs (4.9/game). The Rattlers defense has committed 63 errors. The Chiefs defense has committed 50 errors. Wisconsin is 9-14 in home games this season. Peoria is 8-12 on the road this season.

PEORIA STARTING PITCHER: RHP Nick Struck was a 39th round pick of the Cubs in the 2009 draft out of Mount Hood Community College. Struck was 9-0 with a 1.17 ERA for Mount Hood. He turned down a scholarship to the University of Hawaii to sign with the Cubs. Struck did not pitch professionally in 2009. He is 2-4 with a 4.33 ERA in seven games (six starts) for the Chiefs. Struck pitched a five-inning, rain-shortened no-hitter against Clinton on April 30, but he has lost his last two starts. Today is his first appearance against the Timber Rattlers. It is also his first appearance against an affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers.
